Lip Flip vs Lip Filler: Which Is Right for You?
Reviewed by Carissa-Lynn, Nurse Injector
In the beauty world, achieving the perfect pout has become a top priority for many, leading to a surge in popular lip enhancement procedures. Among the most sought-after options are the lip flip and lip filler treatments.
Whether aiming for a subtle enhancement or a fuller, plumper appearance, understanding the difference between these two options will help you make an informed decision.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the key differences, recovery times, potential side effects, and the aesthetic goals associated with each treatment.
What Is a Lip Flip?
Think of a lip flip as the little booster your lips didn’t know they needed. It’s a lip enhancement procedure that is all about achieving a subtly lifted, naturally beautiful smile.
Lip flip is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure used to show more “pink” of the upper lip and can correct the “gummy smile.” It involves strategically using botulinum toxin injections (commonly known as a muscle relaxer) to create a softer, more alluring lip shape. Targeting the orbicularis muscle, which surrounds your lips, causes the muscle to relax and gently flip the lip outward.
Lip Flip Procedure
Getting a lip flip is quick and easy, and usually takes 10-20 minutes, and the procedure itself only takes a minute or two. Your skilled nurse injector will assess that you are a good candidate for the procedure, complete a health history and explain the procedure. Once you’re all set, tiny injections are administered to the muscle above the upper lip.
The result? A lovely lift that enhances your lips without looking overdone. You'll start to see the results in 3–7 days. The effects of a lip flip typically last around 2 months or more.
What Is Lip Filler?
The dermal filler used in lip filler is primarily composed of hyaluronic acid gel, a naturally occurring substance in the body that adds volume and hydration. This magical gel-like substance can dramatically enhance your lips, giving them that plump, pouty appearance while smoothing fine lines.
Lip Filler Procedure
The lip filler treatment takes 20–30 minutes. After completing an assessment to ensure you are a good candidate, your nurse injector will apply a numbing agent or cream to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, they’ll skillfully inject the hyaluronic acid-based filler into strategic areas of your lips, creating that perfect shape and volume tailored to your aesthetic goals.
Depending on your preferences, this can range from a subtle enhancement to a more dramatic look. Afterward, you might experience minor swelling, but don’t worry—this is perfectly normal! Applying ice packs can help ease any discomfort.
Once the procedure is complete, you’ll walk away with beautifully enhanced lips that make a statement. The effects of hyaluronic acid lip fillers can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months and more, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors.
As the filler gradually dissipates, you can easily maintain your look or adjust your treatment based on your changing aesthetic goals!
Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: Which Is Right for Me?
Now that you're familiar with both treatments, how can you decide which treatment is right for you? Here are a few things to consider.
Desired Aesthetic Goals
First, consider what you are hoping to achieve.
Lip fillers might be your best option if you would like fuller lips and a more dramatic change. If you prefer a more subtle enhancement, the lip flip can provide a gentle lift and a natural shape without adding volume.
Personal Preferences
A lip flip only lasts about 2 months, so it’s a great option if you want to try something new but don’t want the commitment. However, once botulinum toxin is injected, it can’t be reversed. If you aren’t happy with the results, you have to wait for it to wear off naturally.
Lip filler is a more long-lasting option and it can be reversed. If you aren’t happy with the results, or you decide you don’t want it anymore, it can be dissolved with Hyaluronidase.
Consult with a Professional
Ultimately, the best way to decide which is the best option for you is to consult a skilled nurse injector or qualified practitioner.
During your consultation, be open about your aesthetic goals and any concerns you have. It is helpful if you bring photos of your desired look so they have a visual of what you want. A skilled nurse injector will help you understand both lip enhancement procedures and recommend the best option to achieve your goals.

The Dream Team: Combining Lip Flip and Filler Treatments
Why settle for just one when you can have the best of both worlds? While a lip flip and filler can work wonders on their own, combining them can create an even more stunning result!
By combining a lip flip with hyaluronic acid lip fillers, you can achieve a natural shape while also increasing lip volume. The lip flip provides that gentle lift, beautifully accentuating the contour of your lips, while fillers deliver the additional volume needed to create a fuller appearance.
Customization allows you to achieve the perfect balance, whether for a subtle enhancement or a more dramatic transformation.
