Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves using a small handheld motorized microneedling device to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

Tiny needles pierce the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and reach the deeper layers (dermis). This triggers the release of growth factors and stimulates collagen and elastin production, resulting in a smoother, firmer and more youthful looking complexion.

Collagen and elastin are essential proteins in the skin that give it structure, strength and elasticity. As we age, our body's natural production of these proteins decreases, which can lead to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

Microneedling with PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is another popular treatment to combine with microneedling. PRP involves drawing a small amount of blood from the patient and spinning it in a centrifuge to isolate platelets, which are rich in growth factors.

Before, during and after the microneedling process, the PRP is applied to the skin, where it can penetrate deeper due to the microchannels created by the needles. The growth factors in PRP help stimulate collagen and elastin production even further, resulting in enhanced anti-aging benefits and improved overall skin quality.

Due to the reparative function of the platelet-rich plasma, you will also experience increased healing time post procedure.

Hyaluronic Acid Infusion

Along with the microneedling treatment, we use serums to help moisturize and nourish the skin. One of our go-to serums is hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. However, the molecules are often too large to penetrate the skin's surface when applied topically. With microneedling, these molecules are needled into the skin, where they attract and trap moisture, improving hydration levels and plumping up the skin.

Not only does hyaluronic acid provide intense hydration, but it also helps bind water to collagen, promoting a more youthful and radiant complexion. It can also help reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles by keeping the skin moisturized and improving its elasticity.

Microneedling Procedure

Before the microneedling procedure, a topical numbing cream is applied to minimize any discomfort. The microneedling tool used for the treatment contains multiple needles that move up and down at a high speed, creating micro-injuries in the skin.

The hyaluronic acid or other serums are then applied to the skin and absorbed through the microchannels created by the needles. An optional soothing mask is applied at the end of the treatment. The entire process typically takes 1 hr 30 to 1 hr 45 mins, depending on the treatment area.

For those opting for the microneedling with PRP treatment, your practitioner will do a blood draw before the procedure. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is applied to the skin before, during and after the procedure. Any excess PRP can also be injected into areas that need extra rejuvenation, such as fine lines or scars at an extra cost if desired. The entire procedure typically takes 1 hour, depending on the treatment area.

Recovery and Results

After microneedling, patients may experience some redness and mild swelling for a day or two. However, the recovery time is minimal, and most people can resume their daily activities right away. However, it's important to avoid direct sun exposure and use sunscreen regularly following treatment.

The results of microneedling can typically be seen within a few weeks as the skin's natural healing process takes place. However, for optimal results, a series of treatments is recommended.

FAQs About Microneedling

Is microneedling really worth it?

Yes!  Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and overall rejuvenation. However, for the best results, multiple microneedling sessions are usually needed.

What is the downtime after microneedling?

The recovery time is minimal, and most people can resume their daily activities right away. However, patients may experience some redness and mild swelling for a day or two following the procedure.

Is microneedling painful?

Most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure. The topical numbing cream applied before treatment helps minimize any discomfort.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Yes! If you are due for your neuromodulator treatment such as Botox/Dysport, you can receive this treatment after your microneedling procedure at the same appointment. For other medical aesthetic treatments such as filler, you will want to wait 2-4 week pre/post microneedling.

You can get microneedling at the same time as permanent makeup procedures as long as the permanent makeup appointment is done prior to the microneedling session.

Can you microneedle over acne scars?

Yes! Microneedling works very well for acne scars. The micro-injuries created by the needles can help break up scar tissue and stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in smoother, more even skin.

Who shouldn't do microneedling?

Microneedling is generally a safe and effective treatment for most individuals. However, it may not be suitable for those with active skin infections, severe eczema, very sensitive skin, or certain medical conditions that affect wound healing. Disclose any medical conditions and medications to your practitioner during your consultation.

What are the side effects of microneedling?

The most common side effects of microneedling are redness, swelling, and minor bruising. Individuals with a history of oral herpes (cold sores) may experience a flare-up following the treatment. This can be prevented by taking antiviral medication before and after the procedure.
