How to Prepare for Your Scalp Micropigmentation Appointment

Welcome to our four-part blog series on how to prepare for different permanent makeup procedures. In our last blogs, we covered Lip Blush and Permanent Eyeliner Tattoos. Now, we'll take a look at Scalp Micropigmentation.

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure that creates the look of natural hair follicles for a fuller head of hair. It’s perfect for hairline enhancement, scar coverage, or density treatment.

In this blog post, we’ll go over the essential preparation steps to make your scalp micropigmentation procedure as smooth and effective as possible.

Why Proper Preparation Matters for Scalp Micropigmentation

Proper preparation leads to better long-term results.

Taking the right steps before your SMP treatment session helps with:

  • Better pigment retention and longer-lasting results

  • A smoother healing process with minimal irritation

  • Even absorption of pigments for a fuller hair look

  • Minimizing discomfort during the scalp micropigmentation treatment

Pre-Appointment Care for Your Scalp Tattoo Appointment

1. Keep Your Scalp Hydrated

A dry scalp can lead to patchy pigment absorption.

To keep your scalp hydrated:

  • Moisturize your scalp for at least a few days before your SMP session. Use a moisturizing conditioner to prevent excessive dryness.

  • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to support hydrated skin.

2. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure & Tanning Beds

Sunburned or irritated skin cannot be tattooed!

  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds leading up to your appointment.

  • Use SPF to protect your scalp if you’re spending time outdoors.

3. Exfoliate Your Scalp 24 Hours Before

To remove dead skin cells and promote even pigment absorption:

  • Gently exfoliate your entire scalp 24 hours before your appointment using a non-abrasive exfoliant.

  • Avoid harsh scrubs that could irritate your scalp condition.

4. Arrive With a Clean Scalp

Wash your scalp thoroughly the night before or the morning of your appointment with a gentle shampoo or mild soap.

Do not apply any styling products, oils, or topical treatments.

5. If Tattooing Over a Scar, Timing Matters

The scar must be healed for at least one year before your SMP procedure.

Consult your SMP artist to assess whether the scar is ready for pigment application.

6. Avoid Blood Thinners 24-48 Hours Before

Blood thinners can lead to excessive bleeding and poor pigment retention.

  • Avoid alcohol, Advil, Aspirin, and other blood-thinning medications 24-48 hours before your scalp micropigmentation treatment.

  • If you take prescribed blood thinners, consult your doctor before stopping them.

7. Stop Using Hair Growth Products & Fibers

Hair growth products can interfere with the absorption of pigments.

Rogaine (Minoxidil), Toppiks, and other topical hair growth products should be stopped 4 days before your appointment.

8. Eat Before Your Appointment

A balanced meal helps maintain energy levels and prevents dizziness during your treatment session.

9. Guidelines for Different Hair Lengths

Hair Treatment Preparation Steps
Shaved Look (Hairline Enhancement, Scar Coverage, Stubble Effect) Shave your entire scalp to a #1 guard or razor the day before your appointment. If you wear a hair system, remove it 4 days prior to allow for proper scalp exfoliation and cleaning.
Density Treatment (Non-Shaved Look) Any hair length is fine for density treatments. Your artist will discuss the best hair length during your consultation session. If you color your hair, do so at least 2 days before your appointment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Here’s what happens during your SMP treatment session:

  1. Consultation: Your SMP artist will analyze your scalp condition, skin tone, and hair follicles to determine the ideal natural pigment for your look.

  2. Scalp preparation: Your artist will map out the area to be tattooed. When you are happy with the outline, the pigment color is chosen.

  3. Application of pigments: Using a specialized technique, tiny dots of pigment are placed to replicate natural hair follicles.

  4. Aftercare advice: You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to support proper healing.

  5. Follow-up sessions: Additional touch-up appointments may be scheduled to refine the results.

The Scalp Micropigmentation Healing Process: What to Expect

Here's a look at what you can expect while your tattoo is healing:

  • Days 1-3: Mild redness and tenderness on the scalp.

  • Days 4-7: Light flaking may occur as the scalp micropigmentation procedure settles.

  • Days 7-14: The pigment will appear softer and more natural.

  • Weeks 4-6: Healing time is complete, and a follow-up session may be scheduled.
