Why Proper Preparation Matters for Permanent Eyeliner
Permanent eyeliner tattoos enhance your lash line, creating a defined look without the hassle of daily eyeliner application.
Whether you prefer a classic eyeliner, a winged liner, or a lash line enhancement, proper preparation helps maintain vibrant pigment color and supports a smooth healing process.
Following the steps to properly prepare helps to:
Reduce irritation and pigment loss
Prevent excessive swelling or bruising
Proper pigment absorption for long-lasting results
Minimize discomfort during and after your tattooed eyeliner procedure
Pre-Appointment Care for Your Eyeliner Tattoo
1. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure & Tanning Beds
Sunburnt or irritated skin cannot be tattooed!
Avoid tanning beds and direct sunlight for at least a week before your eyeliner tattooing appointment. Use sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your delicate eye area.
2. Discontinue Lash Growth Serums 30 Days Before
Lash serums like can increase blood flow to the lash line, leading to excessive bleeding and poor pigment retention.
Stop using eyelash growth serums at least 30 days before your appointment. Do not resume until your touch-up appointment has healed.
3. Remove Lash Extensions 24 Hours Before
Lash adhesive can interfere with pigment retention and healing.
If you have eyelash extensions, they must be professionally removed at least 24 hours before your appointment.
Need removal? The Beauty Block offers professional lash removal services!
4. Arrive With a Clean Face
Come to your appointment with a fresh, makeup-free face. Avoid applying:
Eyeliner, mascara, or eyeshadow
Concealer or foundation around the eyes
Skincare products like glycolic acid or salicylic acid near the eye area
5. Avoid Blood Thinners 24-48 Hours Before
Certain medications and substances can thin the blood, leading to excessive bleeding and poor pigment retention. Avoid:
Alcohol
Anti-inflammatory medication such as Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, and NSAIDs
Fish oils & omega-3 supplements
If you take prescribed blood-thinning medications, consult your doctor before stopping them.
6. Eat Before Your Appointment
A balanced meal before your session helps to stabilize your blood sugar levels. This will help to prevent dizziness or discomfort during your eyeliner procedure.
7. Contact Lens Wearers: Bring Glasses or a Case
If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses or a contact lens case to your appointment.
You cannot wear contact lenses during your eyeliner tattoo healing process, especially for the first 7 days after the procedure.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Here’s a quick rundown of what happens during your permanent eyeliner tattoo appointment:
Consultation: Your permanent makeup artist will assess your skin type and help you choose the perfect eyeliner shape and pigment color for your desired look.
Preparation: A topical numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort.
Tattooing procedure: Pigment is deposited along the lash line using a specialized tattooing device.
Aftercare: Your artist will provide aftercare instructions to promote proper healing. Expect some swelling and sensitivity after. This is totally normal!
Follow-up appointment: A touch-up session is scheduled 6-8 weeks later to perfect the pigment color and eyeliner design.
The Eyeliner Tattoo Healing Process: What to Expect
Here's a look at what you can expect while your tattoo is healing:
Days 1-3: Mild swelling and sensitivity around the eyes. The pigment appears darker than expected but will soften over time.
Days 3-5: Scabbing or flaking may occur. Avoid picking at the area to prevent pigment loss.
Days 7-14: The color begins to settle into its final shade as healing progresses.
Weeks 4-6: Full healing is complete, and a touch-up session may be needed to perfect the look.
Stay tuned for our final blog in the series, which will explain what you can do to promote the best healing process for all your permanent makeup procedures.
