Retinol and Permanent Makeup: What You Need to Know
Permanent makeup is an amazing way to wake up flawless every day.
But did you know your skincare routine can affect how long your results last? Retinol, a skincare superstar, plays a big role in this.
In this blog, we'll look at how our bodies metabolize pigment, how retinol speeds things up, and what you can do to keep your cosmetic tattoo looking fresh.
How Your Body Metabolizes Pigment
Permanent makeup pigment is designed to be semi-permanent.
Cosmetic tattoo pigment is deposited superficially into the upper dermal layer of your skin. The pigments have smaller molecules than traditional tattoo inks, allowing them to break down faster, which helps them fade naturally over time.
When placed correctly, the pigments will fade between 1-3 years and will look as though it is completely gone by year 4. However, if pigments are inserted too deeply, they may last beyond 4 years, leading to blurry strokes and unpredictable fading in color and intensity.
Over time, your body naturally breaks down and metabolizes this pigment. As it breaks down, your lymphatic system carries it out And disposes of it. This process can vary based on:
Your skin type: Oily skin types may see faster fading.
Skin turnover rate: Faster turnover means pigment fades quicker.
External factors: Sun exposure, skincare products, and lifestyle choices all play a role.
While this breakdown is completely normal, certain ingredients, like retinol, can accelerate the fading of pigment.
How Retinol Affects Permanent Makeup
Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is a powerhouse ingredient in skincare. It boosts skin cell turnover, smooths wrinkles, and promotes collagen production.
But it’s not all good news for permanent makeup.
Why Retinol Speeds Up Fading
Increases skin cell turnover: Retinol pushes new cells to the surface faster, taking pigment with them.
Exfoliates surface layers: This can thin the area around your cosmetic tattoo, causing premature fading.
If you’re using retinol, you might notice your pigment losing its true color or becoming patchy over time.
How to Prepare for Permanent Makeup
Getting ready for your cosmetic tattoo appointment involves more than just booking the date.
You'll want to prepare your skin to achieve the best results. Avoid these products for at least 7-10 days before your appointment:
Retinol and retinoids: These increase skin sensitivity and can affect pigment retention.
Chemical exfoliants: Ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid should be avoided for at least a week. They thin the skin and may lead to uneven pigment.
Hydroquinone: To prevent irritation or discoloration, discontinue this brightening ingredient two weeks before your session.
Acne treatments: Products with benzoyl peroxide or potent active ingredients can interfere with healing.
Permanent Makeup Aftercare
Caring for your cosmetic tattoo during the healing phase is just as important as the aftercare once it’s fully healed.
During the Healing Phase
Use our custom healing ointment: Apply a thin layer of the medicated ointment provided to keep the area hydrated and protected.
Don't pick: Let the scabs and dry skin fall off naturally to prevent uneven pigment loss.
Keep the area clean: Gently cleanse the area around your permanent makeup with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
Avoid heavy sweating: Excess sweat can disrupt the healing process.
Avoid sun exposure: Direct sun can irritate healing skin. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use mineral sunscreen around the area.
Skip makeup: Don’t apply makeup directly over the healing area to prevent irritation or infection.
After Healing Is Complete
Hydrate regularly: Use hyaluronic acid or other non-irritating moisturizers to keep the skin supple.
Apply sunscreen daily: Protect your pigment by using a gentle SPF.
Schedule refreshes: Follow up with your artist for recommended touch-ups to refresh your look and correct uneven pigment every 1-3 years.
Avoid harsh skincare products: Avoid retinol, exfoliants, and peels on or near the area. Use gentle skincare products and follow your permanent makeup artist’s aftercare instructions.
Tips for Using Skincare Safely:
If you must use certain products, here’s how to do it without compromising your cosmetic tattoo:
Avoid the area: Use a soft cotton pad to apply products carefully, avoiding direct contact with the tattooed area.
Use gentle formulas: Stick to mild, fragrance-free products to reduce irritation.
Hydrate: Hyaluronic acid is a safe choice to keep the skin hydrated without interfering with pigment.
*Please note, even if you don’t apply retinol, vitamin C, hydroquinone, or other skincare products directly on top of the treated area, the products will still likely migrate over to the area when applied anywhere on the face as your skin is the largest organ and all connected. Therefore, any use of the mentioned products will inadvertently speed up fading time slightly.
