8 Tips To Get the Most out of Your Lashes

Reading time: Five minutes.

You just got a fresh set of extensions, and you're feeling like a million bucks with your new lashes looking ahhhmazing. Of course, you want to make sure they stay that way for as long as possible.

Don't worry, girl, we've got your back!

In this blog post, we'll share eight tips to help you extend the life of your eyelash extensions so you can enjoy stunning lashes for longer.

1. Choose Your Artist Wisely

First things first, make sure you've chosen a reputable and experienced lash technician. They will have the knowledge and expertise to properly apply extensions that will last longer.

Ask your friends and family for recommendations. Check out before and after photos of their work.

2. Avoid Heavier Lashes

The more dramatic, the better, right? Not always…using thicker lash extensions can put extra weight and strain on your natural lashes. That extra weight can lead to the premature shedding of your natural lashes, resulting in a shorter lifespan for your extensions.

Trust your lash artist's recommendation for the appropriate thickness for your natural lashes.

3. Be Gentle With Your Lashes

Treat your lash extensions like the delicate beauties they are.

Resist the urge to pick! Obviously, picking pulls your extensions off, but it also causes damage to your natural lashes.  Avoid rubbing or pulling on them, as this can cause them to fall out prematurely.

4. Sleep on Your Back

Sleeping on your side or stomach can cause damage to your lash extensions and even your natural lashes. The friction between your lashes and your pillow can put pressure on the lash glue, causing your extensions to fall off sooner than expected and even break your natural lashes.

Of course, we don't want you to lose sleep over your lashes! Consider investing in a satin or silk pillowcase. These materials create less friction and are gentler on your extensions and natural lashes while you sleep.

5. Don’t Use Mascara

If you want to see your extensions make a mass exodus, then use mascara!

Mascara clumps your extensions together and closes up those beautiful volume fans. Clumping detracts from the aesthetic and can place additional strain on your natural lashes. Not only that, but it will require some vigorous scrubbing to remove it, which will cause your extensions to fall off sooner.

If you absolutely must use mascara, choose a water-based and oil-free formula. Waterproof mascara is especially damaging as it requires an oil-based makeup remover and more effort and friction to remove.

6. Keep Them Clean

You might get sick of hearing your lash artist telling you to "wash your lashes." But she has good reason for this! Dirty lashes, especially if you wear eye makeup, can lead to lash mites and even infection.

Wait, did we say lash mites?  Yes, that's a thing! These tiny mites live on your eyelashes and feed off the oils and dead skin cells on your face. They're usually harmless but can lead to inflammation and irritation if left unchecked.

Proper care includes DAILY washing with a gentle lash cleanser designed explicitly for extensions to prevent the buildup of natural oils, dust, and makeup.  We always keep Lash Suds on hand for our clients.

Here's how to use lash cleanser:

  1. Apply one pump of your lash cleanser to each eye.

  2. Use a small makeup brush to gently brush along the lash line and the eyelid in circular and stippling motions.

  3. Thoroughly rinse the lashes with water until there is no cleanser residue left.

  4. After rinsing, gently fan to dry the lashes. You can use a hair dryer on a cool setting or let them air dry.

  5. Once your lashes are fully dried, carefully brush them out with a clean mascara wand to maintain their perfect fan-like shape and remove any tangles.

7. Avoid Hot Steam

Steam, whether from a hot shower or sauna, can weaken the bond of the lash glue. It can also cause the extensions to lose their curl.

Avoid hot steam for at least 4 hours after getting extensions so the glue can fully cure. Also, avoid letting hot water from the shower directly hit your lash line.

8. Get Regular Fills

Lash extensions require maintenance! The average person loses 2-5 natural lashes daily as part of their regular lash cycle. An average lash cycle is 28 days. Your extensions will eventually fall out and need to be replaced.

We recommend getting a lash refill every 2-4 weeks to keep them flawless. During a fill appointment, your lash technician will remove any outgrown or loose extensions and add new ones to keep your lashes looking full and fresh.
