7 FAQs About Microblading

Reading time: Four minutes.

Have you heard about microblading? It's a cosmetic tattooing procedure that has become popular in recent years for good reason! The amazing thing about microblading is that it allows you to achieve natural-looking, perfect brows without the daily hassle of applying brow makeup.

In this blog, we will answer 7 of the most frequently asked questions about microblading ,so you can step into your appointment with confidence.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading, sometimes called nanoblading, is a permanent makeup treatment that allows you to enhance your natural eyebrows.

A small grouping of thin, sterile, single-use needles creates individual hair strokes that mimic natural brow hairs. Microblading is ideal for those with normal to dry skin types.

The tool we use is non-motorized and implants pigment color superficially into the skin. It is considered semi-permanent because the microblading pigment breaks down faster than traditional tattoo ink. However, just because it is semi-permanent doesn't mean it won't last. With touch-ups or โ€˜refreshesโ€™ every 1-2 years, your beautiful brows will look fabulous long-term!

Now, let's answer those frequently asked questions!

1. Does Microblading Fade?

Yes, your microbladed brow will fade over time. Since it's a semi-permanent technique, the color will fade gradually, typically over 12-18 months. It's important to understand that this is a natural part of the process, and your aftercare choices can affect how quickly the pigment fades away.

Things that can affect your color retention include:

  • Sun exposure. Use SPF sunscreen to protect your brows.

  • Iron deficiency anemia.

  • Regular exposure to chlorine or salt water.

  • A skincare routine containing retinol, vitamin C, peroxides, and acids or undergoing treatments like laser and chemical peels.

  • Individuals with oily skin types may notice their microblading fades more rapidly, as oils may cause the pigment to break down sooner.

Follow your technician's pre and post-care instructions for minimal risks and to get the best results.

2. Can I Get Botox After Microblading?

It's advisable to schedule any Botox treatments around your microblading appointment.

If Botox is a consistent part of your lifestyle, schedule it at least two weeks before your microblading session to make sure it has set in and your eyebrows will be sitting where you want them. Botox around the forehead and brow area can alter your eyebrow position and affect the shape or symmetry your technician aims to achieve.

If you are new to botox, we advise you wait to get botox after your microblading session as waiting ensures your eyebrows are in their natural state, allowing your artist to create as much symmetry as possible without needing Botox. You can even get Botox the same day of your microblading procedure as long as it is done after your microblading appointment since it is advised to avoid laying down flat for 4 hours following Botox injections.

3. What Medications Affect Microblading?

Certain medications and medical conditions can affect the microblading procedure. These include heart conditions, heart medications, and blood thinners.

Blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements can increase the risk of bleeding which may affect pigment retention. However, these should not cause any issues after your procedure, during the healing process.

Consult with your technician and doctor if you're taking any of these medications. Never stop any medication(s) without consulting your physcian.

4. How Long Does Microblading Take?

Microblading is not a process that should be rushed. The initial appointment can take up to two hours, sometimes even longer.

The scheduled time is used to consult on the desired look, numb the area, perform the microblading, and review aftercare instructions.

5. Can I Workout After Microblading?

It's best to wait at least one week post procedure to resume working out to ensure proper healing. Activities that cause excessive sweating can cause the pigment to fade. Excessive sweating can also cause the skin to swell which will affect retention. You would also be putting yourself at a higher risk of getting an infection.

If you decide to work out, we recommend keeping it low intensity to avoid sweating (ex: heavy weights with low reps, walking and yoga may be acceptable if they do not cause you to get too sweaty). In addition, try to keep the sweat off of your brows, as it will contribute to fading. Keep in mind, there are still sweat glands and pores in the eyebrows so even wiping the sweat off your forehead or wearing a sweat band will not keep sweat away from the area completely. Also, try not to touch your brows since gyms tend to harbor a lot of bacteria, which can increase your risk of infection.

6. Can You Get Microblading While Breastfeeding?

While it's generally safe to get microblading while breastfeeding, there are a few things you will need to consider. Nursing mothers may metabolize the pigment faster than usual and as a result, the color may fade more quickly. In addition, color change may occur due to hormone changes which would need to be neutrilized at another appointment. And finally, any time the protective skin barrier is broken, you are at a higher risk of infection.

Speak to your healthcare provider before getting any cosmetic procedures while nursing to understand potential risks and precautions.

7. When Can I Get My Eyebrows Wet After Microblading?

You should avoid getting your eyebrows saturated with water for at least the first seven days after the procedure. Take extra care when washing your face or showering.

Exposing your eyebrows to excessive water/moisture can interfere with the healing process, which may result in patchy eyebrows.

You can keep the area clean with mild soap and water, but avoid face washes with active ingredients and avoid scrubbing or rubbing the eyebrows directly. Keep face washing to under 1 minute in duration (the quicker, the better) and blot the eyebrows dry as soon as possible.
